Walter Herbert Smith was born on September 4, 1879 in Thomasville, Georgia. He was the son of Eugene Smith and Elisabeth Fondren. He married Emma Hahr Dobbs, daughter of James Monroe Dobbs Sr. and Emma Charlotte Hahr, on October 28, 1915 in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. He died on May 11, 1946 in Washington, D.C., at age 66.
He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy 1901. Served Philippines, China, Cuba, Mexico, France, thereby earning 5 campaign medals. He had seven other medals besides. He spent eighteen years in the cavalry and was a well known polo player through 20 years. He transferred to Field Artillery 1918. Became polo instructor, one of "ole Army's" outstanding horsemen. Owned eight beautiful horses (3 for polo). Retired after 34 years service, physical disability, Sept 30, 1934. Colonel, US Army. They lived for many years in Washington DC. He is buried at Arlington, section 3, grave 2396.1
